In November Amy Levine, Executive Director and Mijiza Sanchez, Assistant Director of the UCSF Center for Gender Equity attended the 2008 Association for Women’s Rights in Development (AWID) International Forum. Approximately 2200 people (primarily women) from all over the world attended the forum, an indication of just how much women’s rights advocates around the globe value this kind of platform. Held in Cape Town, South Africa, participants represented 140 countries, with 43% coming from Africa.
The theme of this year’s Forum was “The Power of Movements.’” Plenary sessions included The Future of Movements, The Contexts of Our Organising, Making our Movements Stronger: A Look Inside and Women Organising and Transforming the World. There were hundreds of break-out sessions including panels and interactive skill building workshops. It was extremely valuable to hear a global perspective on social justice and women’s rights.
